Why Vivid Loves Celebrity Porn

Well, according to Steve Hirsch of Vivid Entertainment, while the porn industry has suffered because of slowing DVD sales and the recession, it’s far from dying out. I just read Vivid: a new business model for porn in The Hollywood Reporter and learned that part of Vivid’s continued success rides on (pun intended) the clever marketing of celebrity sex DVDs (which run for about $45 a pop). Vivid’s most recent success–Montana Fishburne’s bare all. No, I haven’t seen it.

But according to Steve Hirsch many women have. He quotes: “more women and casual fans tend to buy celebrity tapes, which generally helps them outsell other fare.” I suppose it’s not rocket science that in the era of reality TV and fame obsession, we’re lapping it up. I mean, if we want to read about where stars nosh and shop and how they dress their tots (and I sure do, that is, at least on airplanes and lounging by pools), then it’s not much of an extension to learn how they fuck. Sigh. But I do wonder how these intersections of Hollywood and  porn culture will evolve. Will it one day be the anomaly not to have a sex tape? We are still in a cultural limbo where we both prop up and look down upon celebrities marketing themselves with sex. Or as my boss likes to say about Kim Kardashian: “What the hell did that fat slut ever do?” I’m not sure, I don’t watch her show. But I’m pretty sure she’s laughing her booty all the way to the bank.

Anyway, must go change a few loads of holiday weekend laundry. Hubby is shortly off to film The Real Housewives of the OC for the next few months. Looks like my reality won’t be getting any less strange as I’ll be shacking up beachside for weekends to come. Time for a boob and bleach job, followed by a sex tape? I think not.
